With the Pixel 8, Google would not fall asleep on its laurels for the photo

The Google Pixel 8 (and its Pro version) should be presented this fall. In the meantime, rumors are being heard, as in the photo part, which should be significantly improved this year.

Like every year, there should be a Made by Google event around next October. The opportunity for Google to lift the veil on the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, its best smartphones which would take over from the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro. Where these smartphones are expected is mainly in the photo: in this regard, they should be even better. In any case, this is what reveals Android Authority who was able to retrieve information from a source within Google. This same media had already revealed other details about the Pixel 8.

A main sensor that would capture more light

The main change made to the photo sensors would be on the main module. Samsung’s Isocell GN1 would give way to… Isocell GN2. What this new version brings is above all a larger size: the sensor ” should capture about 35% more light than its predecessor for brighter images and faster shutter speeds to reduce blur “, explain our colleagues.

It would also record videos in 8K at 30 frames per second. An improvement that would also be made possible by updating the chip: the SoC would be the Tensor G3, a logical continuation of the Tensor G2 which equips the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro. Unfortunately, this feature may not be available: the GCam application does not support this definition and the Pixels already released heat up when recording in 4K at 60 frames per second.

Last improvement that could arrive: support for offset HDR, a function that “ reduces the delay between captured frames for HDR to speed up the capture process. This technology could push Google’s HDR+ capabilities “. Enough to have photos taken faster and more reliably.

The ultra-wide-angle of the Pixel 8 Pro would not be outdone

The mediaAndroid Authorityadds that the Pixel 8 Pro would see the sensor of its ultra-wide-angle module updated. Instead of a Sony IMX386, we would be entitled to the 64 Mpx Sony IMX787. This is actually the same sensor as the main module of the Pixel 7a. This sensor is twice as large and, if it is well integrated, could offer photos with better definition and a prettier rendering.

The focal length of the lens would also be slightly shorter: the current field of view is 0.56x and would increase to 0.49x. According to journalists, the macro function added on the Pixel 7 would be absent on the Pixel 8 Pro, without their knowing why.

The Pixel 8 would also have an improved ultra-wide-angle sensor: it would be the same reference, namely the Sony IMX386, but with a wider field of vision. We would thus go from a 0.67x zoom to a 0.55x zoom. On the telephoto side, the Pixel 8 Pro would retain the same x5 module as the Pixel 7 Pro. The same goes for the Pixel 7’s selfie camera, which shouldn’t change.

Camera software updates coming to the Pixel 8 series

Finally, software changes would be expected for these Pixel smartphones, with new features. The first mentioned byAndroid Authorityis here “Adaptive torch“supposed”dynamically adjust flash intensity based on the scenebut also the capture mode. Even in low light, your photos should be better lit.

Another addition: theAWB segmentation“, in other words, the segmentation of the white balance. Using an AI, the Pixel 8s could split a scene into multiple parts to achieve different white balance processing. Finally, there could be a mode for selecting the level of blur for cinematic mode, which made its appearance last year.
