The mid-range of the RDNA3 generation of graphics cards is finally here at AMD. The manufacturer clearly wants to compete here with the recent GeForce RTX 4070 and 4060 Ti from Nvidia with its two new Radeons designed to play at 1440p.
They have been the subject of rumors for a month: AMD made official at Gamescom its two new graphics cards, the Radeon RX 7800 XT and RX 7700 XT. It was during his AMD Game Festival organized during the European show that the brand unveiled its response to Nvidia in the mid-range segment, with the GeForce RTX 4070 and 4060 Ti in its sights.
The brand itself also leaked the visuals of its next cards on X (Twitter) shortly before the event. The Navi 32 GPU is at the heart of these new products with specifics that had been sketched out during the first information last month.
RX 7800 XT: more efficient than the RTX 4070
The RX 7800 XT features 60 processing units (the equivalent of Nvidia’s Cuda Cores from AMD) as well as 16 GB of video memory on a 256-bit bus for a bandwidth of 19.5 Gbps. The GPU clock frequency will rise up to 2430 MHz for a TGP (thermal envelope) of 263W.
With these characteristics, we therefore expect a card with a performance level of the RX 6800 XT of the previous generation. AMD has presented its own benchmarks and announces a gain of 3.5% in 1440p compared to its competitor GeForce RTX 4070. Some gains range, depending on the manufacturer, from 15 to 20% on games like Modern Warfare 2, Cyberpunk 2077 or still Hogwarts Legacy.
The RX 7800 XT will be offered at a suggested price (MSRP) of 549 euros, which could make it the queen of the mid-range if the announced performance follows, while the Nvidia RTX 4070 is still at least 600 euros in stores. But as AMD has shown us in the past, manufacturer benchmarks are anything but reliable. We will of course advise you to wait for the benchmarks of specialized media (with us or with our colleagues) in order to have a real idea of their performance.
RX 7700 XT: a good surprise, except for the price
Its little sister, the RX 7700 XT, displays a technical sheet beyond expectations since it is equipped with 54 calculation units (CU), against the 48 which had been mentioned in the various rumors. This model’s video memory is 12GB of GDDR6 on a 192-bit bus, for slightly lower bandwidth at 18Gbps. Its TGP will rise to 245W.
In terms of performance, AMD also announces gains in 1440p compared to its direct competitor, the GeForce 4060 Ti 16 GB, in particular 26% on Cyberpunk 2077, 21% on The Last of Us Part 1 and 10% on Red Dead Redemption 2. These figures are of course to be taken with a grain of salt, we will always advise you to wait for benchmarks from specialized media, from us or from our colleagues, in order to have a real idea of their performance.
The Radeon RX 7700 XT can be found at the suggested price of 489 euros, a difference of only 60 euros with its big sister (and 50 dollars across the Atlantic). We then have the impression that AMD wanted to make a foil proposal to favor the RX 7800 XT, but here again, the benchmarks will speak once the cards are in our hands.
