Google Messages, the default messaging application on many Android devices, is preparing to receive a new module intended to optimize the sharing of images and videos. Inspired by WhatsApp’s approach, the new image picker would offer an improved preview experience and easier management of media content.

Regular Google Messages users are accustomed to seeing image thumbnails appear in the input field when they select photos to send. However, with this new update, the Mountain View firm would adopt a more dynamic format. So, after choosing a first image to share, it would now be displayed in a full-screen preview in order to get a clear idea of what the recipient will receive. It would also be possible to add the text of the message or other images to the selection using an “Add more” button redirecting to the gallery or the camera.

Currently in development, this feature is only available to select Google Messages beta 20240318_01_RC00 testers and is part of a series of recent updates aimed at improving the user experience. In addition to WhatsApp, these new functions are often inspired by competing messaging apps, such as Messenger or Instagram.

Google is thus seeking to prevent users from turning away from traditional messaging in favor of third-party applications, even though the new European Digital Markets Act aims to leave more room for competition. The next step will be the integration of generative AI into Google Messages, which will make it possible to obtain suggested replies, instant translations or to exchange with Google’s AI during a conversation.
