THE OPINION OF THE “WORLD” – NOT TO BE MISSED
As the title suggests, American Nightmare 5: limitless is the fifth installment of a franchise created in 2013 by screenwriter and director James De Monaco. This cinematographic series, one of the most fascinating of the moment, succeeded not only in maintaining its basic premise, but also in enriching it with each episode with an additional dimension, as if the very principle on which the saga was built was capable of exposing and dissolving endless archaic mythologies and contemporary anxieties. The terror film becomes a thinking machine as well as a particularly captivating entertainment.
The political system, racism, class struggle, the legitimacy of revenge, economic violence were the scriptwriting engines of the series’ shutters. American Nightmare draws from the sources of the history of the United States, its ideological vision and its legendary construction to propose a speculation nourished both by progressivism (in the explicit discourse) and nihilism (in the sadistic exploitation of violence). It is the unsurpassable alchemy of today’s Hollywood horror cinema.
Directed by Mexican Everardo Gout, but still from a screenplay by James De Monaco, American Nightmare 5: limitless takes up the basic situation of the series. In what we imagine to be the near future, every year, during one night (the Purge), crimes and misdemeanors are authorized. This triggers an outbreak of assassinations, rapes and lynchings. This unbridled violence acts as a social purge for the political leaders of the United States. It is a way, essential to a pacification of social relations, to evacuate an overflow of energy and frustrated brutality.
Bloody carnival
The story moves here in Texas and the main protagonists are Mexican immigrants, specimens of cheap labor, and a couple of ranchers who employ them. They will all become the target of Purge fanatics and will be threatened by a hatred that seeks to satisfy itself in murder and manhunt. The surge of violence will give everyone the opportunity to prove their worth and to overcome racial prejudices for the main characters. The angle chosen is, quite obviously, that of denouncing racism. The film has fun, in fact, to operate a dialectical inversion, easy but ironically didactic, showing various Americans “of stock” seeking to flee violence by penetrating, by all means, in Mexico, which hesitates to open its borders to them. . The scenario connects the adventures with real skill. After, realistic, disturbing, American Nightmare 5: limitless is gradually built on action and suspense scenes treated with real mastery.
