Wizards of the Coast (Dungeons & Dragons) cancels at least 5 games in development, employees and third-party studios impacted

Brake on the video game field for Wizards of the Coast. While the company behind Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons had a bunch of video game projects on the go, several of them were just canceled outright. The branch of Hasbro has just confirmed thatit put an end to the development of at least 5 titles.

She does not, however, give up the idea of making games, but simply wants refocus on promising new licenses and titles that make the most of its cult franchises : in other words, he wants to favor quality over quantity. Recent Dungeons & Dragons: Dark Alliance (available from €12.19 at Amazon.co.uk) and Baldur’s Gate 3 obviously did not make it possible to consolidate the coffers, whereas WOTC reported results down 40% in its last fiscal year. Here is the press release that was sent to IGN and other writings:

We remain committed to using digital games as a cornerstone of our strategy to bring our games to gamers around the world. We have made some changes to our long-term portfolio to focus on games that are strategically aligned with the development of our existing brands and those that show promise for expanding or engaging our audience in new ways.

According to Bloombergless than 15 positions will be cut internally following this change of course, and all impacted employees will be offered new assignments if they wish. Canceled projects would be those developed by OtherSide Entertainment (studio of Warren Spector who had already broken his teeth on SystemShock 3) and Hidden Path Entertainment (a Open-world RPG Dungeons & Dragons formalized last year), as well asa project whose code name was Jabberwockyand two others conducted externally and still in pre-production. And for these external partners, the situation should be more complex to manage, hoping that Wizards of the Coast sufficiently supported them financially.

the AAA ofInvoke Studiosthe next game G.I. Joe and the first draft ofArchetype Entertainment are they among the victims, or will they be survivors? Only the future will tell us.
