The wolf had no external injuries, but had several broken bones and internal bleeding, Nicolas Bourquin, head of the Valais department for hunting, fishing and wildlife, told the Keystone-SDA news agency on Thursday.
Two wolves died between the end of November and mid-December as a result of a traffic accident in Valais. The first was found dead in the Pfynwald in the municipality of Leuk, just a few meters from the cantonal road. The autopsy confirmed he had been hit by a car.
On the other hand, a lynx that died in December after a collision with a car on the road to the Great St. Bernhard near Sembrancher had previously been shot at. The autopsy revealed that metal splinters came from an old bullet hole. The canton has therefore filed criminal charges against unknown persons.
