Women continue to be underrepresented among business creators in France and in 2018 only represented 35% of them, underlines INSEE in a study published Thursday.

This percentage has hardly changed over the years, since only 32% of business creators were women in 2010 and 33% in 2014.

In 2018, women represented nearly 49% of the working population in France, according to data published at the end of April by the National Institute of Statistics.

“If we define a creator‑type of business (…) it is a man (65% of creators) under the age of 40 (56%). Without experience in entrepreneurship (72 %), he was just before the creation of his company employed in the private sector or the public service (38%)”, details INSEE in its study.

The share of women among business creators varies according to the profiles of entrepreneurs: they represent 43% of the workforce among people who create a business in parallel with another professional activity, but only 20% among business creators the most seasoned.

Among students and recent graduates, four out of ten business creators are women.

Another lesson from this study: students and young graduates represented 8% of business creators in 2018, compared to only 3% in 2010.

“This increase is mainly fueled by the creation of businesses under the status of micro-entrepreneur. The number of students creating an activity under this regime has in fact multiplied by five in eight years, going from 2,600 to 13,200 creations”, explains INSEE.
