  • The Swiss national ice hockey team suffered a clear defeat against the USA in the second group game of the World Cup in Brampton (CAN).
  • Against the dominating Americans, it drops 1:9.
  • The first goal for the USA falls after just seven seconds.

The surface in the ice rink in Brampton, Canada, was still very fresh when the Americans were able to celebrate against the Swiss national ice hockey team for the first time. Just seven seconds after the start of the game, the favorites from North America took the lead. Abbey Murphy tanked on the right and caught Saskia Maurer from a tight angle in the Swiss goal. It was the fastest goal ever scored at a World Cup. The direction of march in this second group game for coach Colin Muller’s team was set.

Because the US team more than lived up to its role as favorites in the episode. After the Swiss were able to prevent the second goal they conceded, they conceded three goals within 97 seconds towards the end of the third period:

  • 16 minutes: After winning a face-off, Caroline Harvey fakes a pass at the blue line and shoots. Maurer has a clear view, but cannot parry the shot.
  • 16 minutes: The Americans reacted at lightning speed after a bad pass from Alina Müller in their own zone. Taylor Heise serves Hannah Bilka, who catches Maurer right between the legs.
  • 17 minutes: Gabrielle Hughes sees Rebecca Gilmore from behind the goal, who then just has to slide in.

After the Swiss made an appealing defensive performance in the first group game against Canada, the USA made the task too easy. The North Americans kept creating good opportunities without much resistance and knew how to use them.

In the middle period, the favorites continued to increase the score, after 40 minutes the score was 6:0. And the picture remained the same in the final third: the Americans celebrated offensive ice hockey with a lot of running work and thus overwhelmed the Swiss defense. With her second personal goal, Harvey made it 7-0 (48th).

There was something to celebrate for Switzerland: Rahel Enzler scored in the 51st minute to make it 7-1. The consolation goal for the Nati was the first goal against the USA at a major event in 15 years. Cayla Barnes and Gabrielle Hughes were concerned for the 9-1 final score.

This is how it goes
