Wonder Woman is broadcast this Sunday evening on TF1. The opportunity to return to the comments that James Cameron, whose Avatar: The Way of the Water is a hit at the global box office to the point of having beaten Star Wars, had made in August 2017 on the film. The Canadian notably gave his opinion on the image of the woman returned by the super-heroic adventure led by Gal Gadot.
In an interview with the newspaper The Guardian for the release of the 3D version of his Terminator 2, James Cameron had thus let himself go to a little confidence concerning the Wonder Woman directed by Patty Jenkins. When the journalist had asked him what he thought of the success of the film (which, as a reminder, reaped nearly 823 million dollars in revenue worldwide), Cameron spoke “from a throwback”…
“All of the self-congratulation that Hollywood spreads about Wonder Woman is so misleading. In this movie, Wonder Woman is an objectified icon. It’s just male Hollywood doing the same thing again!” released as a cruise missile the one who is behind the creation of great female figures in cinema, like the iconic Sarah Connor of the Terminator saga.
And to add: “I’m not saying I didn’t like the movie but, for me, it’s a step backwards. Sarah Connor wasn’t a beauty icon. She was strong, she was troubled, she was a bad mother. And she won the respect of the public, despite everything, by her determination and her courage. In my opinion, the benefit of characters like Sarah is so obvious. After all, half of the public is female!
Wonder Woman 3: what future for the DC superheroine in the cinema?
Stung to the quick, director Patty Jenkins split a -scathing- response on her Twitter account: “James Cameron’s inability to understand what Wonder Woman is or means to women everywhere is unsurprising because while he is a great filmmaker, he is not a woman! […] There is no good or bad power woman. And the vast female audience that made Wonder Woman a success can certainly choose their own progressive icons.” Close the ban.
