Timothée Chalamet in a musical prequel to “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” – can that work? It can, at least if the first reviews of “Wonka” are to be believed. So you shouldn’t doubt Paul King, the director of the two “Paddington” films, and many families are looking forward to the upcoming “Wonka” cinema visit.

But of course not everyone likes going to the cinema. Whether it’s the weather, the prices or the loud audience, many film fans prefer home cinema and prefer to wait until “Wonka” comes to them on stream. But when will the time come?

Stream start in January?

“Wonka” is a Warner Bros. production and the film studio usually releases new films on stream almost a month after their theatrical release. For example, “Barbie” was released in cinemas on July 20, 2023 and could be bought and rented digitally on September 5.

This early stream release has a small disadvantage: it usually costs just under 15 euros to rent a new Warner title; it costs 20 euros if you want to buy it directly. These prices usually only fall after two months, namely when the start of Blu-Ray sales gets closer.

For “Wonka” this means: You can probably watch the film as a stream on Amazon Prime Video or iTunes as early as mid-January 2024, if the high price doesn’t put you off. It will probably be cheaper from March 2024 and you can also put “Wonka” on your shelf.

In the US, “Wonka” is expected to be released on MAX in May 2024. Since this streaming service does not exist in Germany, Sky is the first to be awarded the contract. It will probably take a little longer and “Wonka” will not be available on Sky and WOW until June or July 2024.

Other streaming services have to do without “Wonka” for the time being. Only in mid-2025, when Sky and WOW lose the exclusive license to the film in Germany, could “Wonka” also appear on Netflix or Amazon Prime Video as part of the regular subscription.
