Do you remember the board game Mastermind? As early as the 1970s, four colored plastic buttons provided great guessing fun: you had to decode the color combination your opponent had set up in up to twelve series of attempts. White and black plugs helped, which showed the person guessing whether a color actually existed and whether it was plugged in the right position. With the same game principle, the web app Wordle has been causing a sensation for weeks. Now the puzzle trend is finally available in German!
Wordle: Now also in German
Wordle is not an app, but a website. Originally, the game was only available in English, so German speakers with limited knowledge of English had little fun with it. Because Wordle is open source, Austrian developer Philip Hübner recently released an 11,000-word German-language version, which you can access via the link below this section. But be careful: Not only nouns are searched for, but also verbs. And they can also be in the past tense or even conjugated. Umlauts make the German version more difficult, because you have to type them in as “ae”, “oe” or “ue”. If the puzzle is too easy for you, click on the cogwheel in the upper right corner and activate the difficult mode. There is also a Dark Mode switch (“Dark Colors”) as well as a mode for color blind people.
Wordle: That’s how it works
Instead of four colors as in Mastermind, Wordle searches for a word with five letters. Type in a word and press Enter. You then have five more attempts to find the word you are looking for. These colors will help:
- Green: The letter is in the correct position.
- Yellow: The letter occurs, but in a different place.
- Gray: The letter is not present in the word.
Fortunately, the colors not only appear in the result, but also in the on-screen keyboard below. This prevents you from entering letters that have already been discarded. By the way: Wordle is limited to one puzzle per day. So once you’ve found the word, you’ll have to wait until the next day for a new round.
