Sweden – Canada 3: 4 aet

In Tampere things went back and forth dramatically between Sweden and Canada. The Northern Europeans were 3-1 up to the 59th minute, qualifying for the semi-finals was within reach. But then the Canadians were finally able to turn their attacking efforts into goals: Within 30 seconds, Pierre-Luc Dubois and Mathew Barzal scored to make it 3-3. The “maple leaves” took the momentum straight into extra time, in which Drake Batherson scored the much-acclaimed 4:3 on the power play after 43 seconds. The Canadians’ victory was anything but stolen, as they had missed a number of chances: in the second period, the shots on goal ratio was 19:1 for the North Americans, but it was the Swedes who were able to make it 3:0.

Germany – Czech Republic 1:4

After the most successful World Cup preliminary round in Germany, coach Toni Söderholm lost 4-1 to the Czech Republic on Thursday in Helsinki. After the 4th place in Riga in 2021, the Germans missed the 2nd semi-final in a row and the wait for the 1st World Cup medal since 1953 continues. In the last third, the Germans threw everything forward and even took out the goalie 8 minutes before the end. It wasn’t enough for more than the connection hit. Roman Cervenka, a player for the Rapperswil-Jona Lakers, became the man of the game for the Czechs. He prepared the 1st and 3rd goal of his colors and scored the 2nd goal himself.

Finland – Slovakia 4:2

Finland did not solve the semi-final ticket without a fight. The hosts defeated Slovakia 4-2. The game had started badly from a “Suomi” point of view. Adam Sykora and Pavol Regenda gave the underdogs the lead. The Scandinavians didn’t let the 0:2 deficit upset them. Marko Anttila scored the final goal before the first siren and equalized the game after 4 minutes in the middle third. Sakari Manninen scored the winning goal in the 45th minute. After that, the Finns withstood the attacks of the courageous Slovaks and made everything clear with a goal into the empty goal.
