5 out of 6 podium places at the Speed Climbing World Cup in Vaud go to China. There was also a world record.

The World Cup event in Villars-sur-Ollon in the canton of Vaud degenerated into a Chinese festival – at least in the speed discipline. There was an all-Chinese podium for the men, while the women celebrated a double victory.

Jianguo Long won the men’s heart-stopping final against Peng Wu by a hundredth of a second. It was Long’s first top-level success. Jinbao Long ranked 3rd.

In the women’s final, Lijuan Deng also celebrated her first World Cup victory. She prevailed against Di Niu. Deng had already shown her class in the semifinals. The 6.82 seconds meant an Asian record. The Indonesian Dewi Desak prevented a triple China triumph with rank 3.

Katibin: 2x world record, then eliminated

The spectators experienced the big surprise in the men’s quarter-finals: Kiromal Katibin slipped shortly before the finish and had to give up. The only 21-year-old Indonesian is the dominant figure in men’s speed climbing. Katibin had already broken the world record twice in a short period of time during the qualification. First he conquered the wall in 5.09 seconds, then he was another 5 hundredths faster. It seems only a matter of time before the magical 5 second mark is broken.

There were no Swiss among the top 16 in either the women’s or the men’s finals.
