World of Warcraft: two decades of adventure

Beginnings and rise

Launched by Blizzard Entertainment on November 23, 2004, WoW is the fourth installment in the Warcraft franchise, which began in the early 1990s. WoW introduced a fantasy universe where players could choose to join the Alliance or the Horde, explore vast territories, battle mythical creatures, and take part in epic quests. From the beginning, WoW featured gameplay depth, immersing players in a rich world with colorful characters and amazing plots. The creators of World of Warcraft have continued to to evolve constantly the product. Some major changes have marked the history of the game. The improvements have focused on the technique, but also the graphics which have gained in detail and finesse. The environments have been considerably enriched, becoming lusher and more fluid.

WoW has constantly evolved without giving in to player expectations. The most famous MMORPG game has remained true to its heritage despite the newness of each expansion.

  • World of Warcraft, the original game : laid the foundations with a rich world and a multitude of races and classes. Players could explore Azeroth, participate in raids and dungeons, and compete in PvP battlefields.
  • The Burning Crusade : The first expansion, released in 2007, introduced two new playable races, the Blood Elves and the Draenei, and increased the level cap from 60 to 70. It also added new territories and instances.
  • Wrath of the Lich King : This expansion continued to enrich the WoW universe with the introduction of the frozen continent of Northrend and the Death Knight, a new heroic class.
  • Cataclysm : Reshaped the world of Azeroth, modifying existing areas by introducing new ones. Two new races, Goblins and Worgens, have been added.
  • Mists of Pandaria : this expansion saw the arrival of a new race, the Pandaren, and a new class, the monk. It also introduced the pet battle system.
  • Warlords of Draenor : allowed players to build and manage their own stronghold, a customizable base with buildings and subjects.
  • Legion : brought a new zone, the Broken Isles, and a new heroic class, the demon hunter. The Artifact System was also introduced, allowing customization of legendary weapons.
  • Battle for Azeroth : This expansion focused on the conflict between the Alliance and the Horde, introducing warfronts and island expeditions for dynamic combat.
  • Shadowlands : took players to the afterlife of Azeroth, with new areas to explore and the Covenant system to join.
  • Dragonflight : the latest expansion continues to evolve the game with new areas, playable dragons and redesigned game systems.

A new one is planned for 2024. The War Within is part of a story arc called Worldsoul, which also includes two other upcoming expansions Midnight And The Last Titan. The War Within will plunge players into the depths of Azeroth. It promises to continue to enrich the WoW universe with new stories and regions to explore.

Challenges and controversies

Let the game that has never experienced this kind of challenge raise your hand! For example, on technique and gameplay, constantly balancing WoW’s many classes and specializations has always been a challenge, with frequent adjustments to maintain a fair gameplay. Each new expansion adds complexity to the game, which can be intimidating for newbies and those returning after a break.

Some players have been quick to criticize the time-based progression mechanics, finding them restrictive and frustrating. Reception of expansions varies, with some being met with enthusiasmwhile others, like Shadowlands, are considered disappointing.

What a long journey since its beginnings! With a still active community and ambitious plans for the future, WoW promises to continue to be a force majeure in the world of Gaming. Azeroth’s adventure is far from over.
