Ex-world champion increases pressure on Löw

The attitude of national coach Joachim Löw to the trio Thomas Müller, Jérôme Boateng, Mats Hummels is clear – a return is not planned. Sami Khedira now appeals to reconsider this decision. Also because he sees no sign of weakness in it.

Sami Khedira has suggested to national coach Joachim Löw to bring his former world champion colleagues Thomas Müller, Jérôme Boateng and Mats Hummels back to the national soccer team. From the 33-year-old's point of view, this would be the sensible way to have a say in the 2021 European Championship and, above all, the 2022 World Cup. In an interview with "Bild am Sonntag", Khedira, who was no longer taken into account at Juventus Turin, justified this with the fact that good, young players first had to assert themselves against those like Müller, Boateng and Hummels who had great personalities.

If you clear the road for young players right away, this is the absolutely wrong signal for him, said Khedira. "If you weed out older top players from the start, we won't reach the maximum level. Sensationally good young players can grow on such players," emphasized the midfielder. "But: If they don't have to assert themselves against someone, they will remain limited in their own bubble."

Such a decision would cost Löw a lot of energy. "Would he be the weak one then? No! He would be the strong one! Because he would need a lot of energy," said Khedira. Löw recently stated that he did not see any reason for a return campaign at the moment. The 60-year-old wants to put everything to the test before the European Championship finals. Overall, Khedira certified the DFB selection to have lost a little identity in recent years. The reason is a lot of changes and new invitations.

The fact that Löw is a good coach shouldn't be questioned, underlined Khedira. "For me the question is: Will he still get the players emotional after so many years? Do the players want to understand and absorb it?"

Khedira also commented on his own situation and said that if he were to leave Juventus in winter, he would be tempted to move to the Premier League. But it could also be a club outside of England that does not play internationally.
