Belinda Bencic is in round 2 of the WTA 500 tournament in Washington. Her opponent Anastasija Potapova had to give up.

Belinda Bencic (WTA 15) led 6:5 and a break in the first set when her Russian opponent Anastassija Potapova (WTA 26) had to give up. The Russian suffered from her injured left ankle. The eastern Swiss are again leading 2-1 head-to-head after Potapova won the last meeting in 2021.

In her first tournament since the round of 16 out in Wimbledon, number 6 seeded Bencic meets Lauren Davis (WTA 54) in the round of 16. The qualifier prevailed in the American duel against Sloane Stephens (WTA 40) in 3 sets. Bencic has won all 3 previous encounters against the 26-year-old.

Due to problems in her right arm, the eastern Swiss recently skipped the Hopman Cup in Nice and the Ladies Open in Lausanne.
