WWDC 2022 – Apple Pay, Safety Check, Maps, Live Text… The essential new things to remember

Apple presents iOS 16, the new version of its operating system dedicated to iPhones. If it is not a major overhaul, the mobile OS includes many innovations, of which here are the main ones.

The latest version of iOS, stamped 16 and currently reserved for developers (but also for impatient people choosing to try its beta) includes various new features. Among them, an enriched lock screen and various options dedicated to messages. But the list of innovations does not stop there.

Shared albums in iCloud

Apple includes in iOS 16 an iCloud Shared Photo Library function that allows you to create libraries of images shared with up to six people in the apple cloud. The option to send to this shared space appears as soon as the photo is captured, and it is possible to apply various parameters to the sharing (a start date, for example). We note the suggestion of automatic sharing when certain faces are detected, or the pooling of photo editions to all members of the group.

Live text goes to video

You knew Live Text in still photos, this option capable of detecting text in images and offering its translation, copying and pasting it or performing instant conversion for currencies. This option will also appear in videos. It will then suffice to tap on Pause while the video is playing to use it.

Visual search, announced with iOS 15 in the United States and arriving late in France, gains a new option. This feature, which allows elements (objects, animals) to be recognized on snapshots, now makes it possible to automatically clip a detected element and send it in one tap per message. It remains to be seen whether this option will be open to markets other than the United States for its debut.

New in Apple Pay

The new features of Apple Pay, and more generally of Apple Wallet, are for their part the prerogative of the North American market. This is the case of the Apple Pay Later function, which will allow users to make a payment with their iPhone in four instalments free of charge, but also of Apple Pay Order Tracking, which will integrate delivery tracking into the payment app of the fruity firm.

No better on the side of the new Apple Wallet, capable of storing identity documents in the United States. The application, in its version adapted to iOS 16, will allow only part of the user’s information to be shared (for example, whether or not he is of legal age). They will also be able to store and authorize the sharing of hotel or house keys via the Messages app.

Protect individuals

iOS 16 aims to give everyone control over the data they share. A tool is appearing this year: Safety Check. This will revoke the permissions and access granted to a person by whom the user feels threatened. The system will also offer to facilitate the creation of accounts for children via the Family Sharing function, and will guide the parent in defining parameters adapted to his offspring.

Finally, let’s end this roundup with some more updates. Apple Plans, for example, will benefit in France from the version launched last year across the Atlantic. We note the redesign of the Home app and associated widgets for managing connected objects in the home, or even the addition of password management options in Safari.
