Xiaomi 12X in the test: This is how you really save in the upper class
Xiaomi has introduced three new smartphones for the upper class. The current top model is the Xiaomi 12 Pro. There are also two very handy models, the Xiaomi 12 with a top processor and the cheaper Xiaomi 12X. The practical test of the Xiaomi 12X, which is available from 699.90 euros, shows where the differences to the 12 Pro and the Xiaomi 12 are and what concessions you have to make.
Xiaomi 12s: Three hand flatterers
When it comes to the feel, the trio agree: Glossy is out and matt is in. We agree with that immediately. It’s just more comfortable to touch and fingerprints aren’t annoying either. Even the frames are matte. 12X and the 12 Pro appear a bit more velvety, the Xiaomi 12 a bit more grippy. Everything is pleasantly rounded, only the side buttons and the camera block, which protrudes by almost 3 millimeters, have tangible edges, but you don’t have to be afraid of them. You should rather be afraid of too much water, because almost all Xiaomi smartphones do not have an effective IP certification. Of course, you can survive the rain unscathed without IP68, but you can’t be sure and consequently there are bad grades in the corresponding test chapter without certification or only with IP53.

Xiaomi 12 series: Strong OLEDs
In contrast to Samsung, Xiaomi bends all displays towards the narrow edge and thus ensures an elegant appearance. Despite a diagonal of 6.28 inches, the housing is only 69.9 millimeters wide. Protected by Gorilla Glass Victus, the OLED in the 12X is high-contrast, colourful, bright and sharp and is almost as good as the more expensive models. The 12 Pro not only has the larger screen, it also has a resolution of 3200×1440 pixels. However, the Xiaomi 12X and the Xiaomi 12 also achieve a good sharpness of 419 ppi with 2400×1080 pixels. The high screen change frequency of up to 120 Hertz ensures a smooth display with rapidly changing image content. In short: As far as the display is concerned, the 12X is as strong as the Xiaomi 12.
Tempo with economy processor?
The processor is probably the most important difference, which in the end may not be so terribly important. The Xiaomi 12X contains the Qualcomm Snapdragon 870, which also has 5G in its luggage. The two siblings are even better equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. In everyday life, these differences are actually bearable, because all three can be operated smoothly. And the Xiaomi 12X also shows itself to be able to cope with demanding games in benchmarks. In the Geekbench 5 multi-core, the Xiaomi 12 (3843) and Xiaomi 12 Pro (3788) set themselves apart from the 12X (3381). For comparison: The Xiaomi 11T Pro got 3,350 points, the Xiaomi Mi 11 got 3,632 points – both with Snapdragon 888. The Xiaomi 12X doesn’t lack much here. Who is not a hardcore gambler and values everyone frame phe second lays, gets by well and quickly with the 12X. With the 12X, Xiaomi has saved on the processor, but without it really hurting.
Furnishing
On board are 8 gigabytes (GB) of RAM (LPDDR5) and 256 GB of device memory (UFS 3.1). You have to keep that in mind when you compare the prices to the Xiaomi 12, which is also available with 128 gigabytes. The operating system used in the 12X is Android 11 with Xiaomi’s MIUI 13 interface. The siblings are already based on Android 12 and could possibly have a newer Android version at the end of the life cycle, especially since Xiaomi 12 and 12 Pro are supposed to get three Android updates. For the 12X, there was no such information so far. NFC is not only on board for Google Pay. There is also WiFi 6 (WiFi 6 Plus on the 12 and 12 Pro) and Bluetooth 5.1. This means that the 12X cannot pair with two headphones or Bluetooth boxes at the same time like the 12 or 12 Pro with Bluetooth 5.2. The card slot only swallows two SIM cards. The memory is not expandable.
Xiaomi 12X: Fast charging
The Xiaomi 12 and 12X have a battery with a capacity of 4,500 milliampere hours (mAh). The 12 Pro with 4,600 mAh lasted 8:34 hours in the COMPUTER BILD smartphone battery test with uninterrupted use. With a smaller battery and smaller display, we expect a comparable endurance for the Xiaomi 12X. We will provide the exact values after the laboratory test. Although the little twelves don’t reach the extraordinary 120 watt charging power of the Pro, even 67 watts are enough to clearly outclass all Samsung and Apple fast chargers. The bulky quick-charging power supply is included with Xiaomi, Samsung and Apple don’t need it at all. In the charging chapter there is the second big difference besides the processor, because unlike the Xiaomi 12 and the 12 Pro you have to do without wireless charging with the Xiaomi 12X.
Overview of new smartphones
Xiaomi 12X with 50 MP camera
The Xiaomi 12X has the same camera equipment on the back as the Xiaomi 12. The main camera (Sony IMX766; f/1.88) has optical image stabilization (OIS). In standard mode, 4 pixels are combined into one pixel with an edge length of 2 μm (4-in-1 binning), resulting in a 12.5 MP photo. The Pro has the same resolution but a slightly larger sensor.
The ultra wide-angle lens (f/2.4) has a recording angle of 123 degrees and a resolution of 13 megapixels. With the Xiaomi 12 Pro, all lenses come to 50 megapixels.
Telephoto shots are possible with up to tenfold magnification. But then you can clearly see that it was mainly digitally enlarged here. The photo quality suffers. Especially with practical zoom levels of three or four times magnification, Samsung does a much better job here with its three times optical zoom and larger digital reserves.
The third lens has a focal length of 50 mm and works as a macro in such a way that you can take a sharp picture even if you are only a few centimeters away from the subject. The resolution is 5 megapixels. The Pro has a portrait camera instead, which doesn’t take any viable macro photos.
The front camera has 32 megapixels and was not fully convincing in the practical test. Pictures were good in daylight, but the main camera’s night vision capabilities are lacking in poor lighting.
Xiaomi 12X: price, release, colors
The Xiaomi 12X and its two siblings come in blue, purple and grey. With 8/256 GB, the Xiaomi 12X costs 699.90 euros (RRP). Memory adjusted, you save 200 euros compared to the Xiaomi 12. The presale started on March 15th. The official start of retail sales is March 29, 2022. Pre-orderers receive a Redmi Watch 2 Lite worth 69.99 euros (RRP) from Xiaomi and participating partners.
Test conclusion: Xiaomi 12X
The Xiaomi 12X doesn’t feel like a budget model. It is easy to use and has a great display. You have to aim for it to register the difference in speed compared to the faster Xiaomi 12. Both take strong photos with the main camera in good and bad light. There are real losses in terms of convenient wireless charging, which the 12X does without. The fast loading speed via USB type C is a good consolation. You have to and can live with Bluetooth 5.1 instead of 5.2, WiFi 6 without Plus and Android 11 instead of Android 12 as a basis. With its entry-level price, the Xiaomi 12X has what it takes to become a secret family favourite.
