Xiaomi always equips the more expensive devices in the Xiaomi series (formerly the Mi series) with good technology. This means that these smartphones usually receive update support for over two years. But you can also count on at least one Android update for the cheaper Redmi models. The manufacturer even promises three major Android updates for the top smartphones Xiaomi 12 and 12 Pro.

At the subsidiary brand Poco, at least the X and F series models mostly receive an Android update.

Xiaomi has announced that buyers of the Xiaomi 13 will receive a significantly longer guarantee for updates than previous devices from the manufacturer. The smartphone should receive Android 14, Android 15 and also Android 16. Security patches will then be distributed until 2028. The manufacturer promises four Android updates for the Redmi K60 Ultra. However, this statement initially only applies to the Chinese market.

Xiaomi smartphones do not have normal Android installed, but rather their own user interface called MIUI.

MIUI: Xiaomi’s new user interface at a glance

MIUI 14 is currently being rolled out for the first devices. The user interface was already presented in China in December 2022 and is now also reaching the first models in the rest of the world. MIUI 14 is intended to offer features from Android 13 and expand functionality. For example, better data protection should be guaranteed in the future. In addition, sharing photo albums via the cloud is now possible, you can copy texts from images and there are improvements in the efficiency of the software. Of course, there are a few other functions that you can read about in our report on MIUI 14.

Tip: Disable advertising in MIUI

Are you fed up with the advertisements displayed in the MIUI interface? Then you can deactivate the displays in just a few steps.

You can also look forward to new live wallpapers and animations as well as a widget system like Apple and Samsung. MIUI 13 is also said to optimize battery, stability and performance. Xiaomi also changes the font of the user interface to “MiSans”.

That’s how long you have to wait for Android updates from Xiaomi

So far, the Chinese manufacturer has taken a little more time before releasing new Android versions. Last year, the period between the announcement of an update and the rollout for Xiaomi smartphones was significantly shortened; users in Germany had to wait around four months for Android 13. Xiaomi was a little faster with Android 12. With Android 14, however, the manufacturer would like to start delivering the update a little earlier.

An Android update is planned or available for these models

The following list includes all Android-based smartphones from Xiaomi that have been released in Germany since 2017. Models from the Xiaomi brands “Blackshark” and “Pocophone” are also listed here. Xiaomi: These smartphones receive security updates

In addition to version updates, Xiaomi also distributes security patches. These usually do not contain any new features, but rather close security gaps in the operating system. Google releases a new security patch for Android every month. However, the manufacturers are not obliged to always distribute this. Particularly secure devices receive the ”Android Enterprise Recommended” certification (AER) and can be used almost without any concerns.
