Xiaomi wants to enter the electric car market in force, since the Chinese manufacturer already plans to deliver at least 100,000 vehicles by the end of the year. To achieve this ambitious objective, Xiaomi was particularly inspired by Tesla and its production methods, which today allow it to deliver several million vehicles per year.
From its launch, Xiaomi’s first electric car was a real hit. In just a few hours, the Chinese manufacturer already had no less than 120,000 orders, but some buyers had since withdrawn. However, the car’s impressive performance and aggressive pricing seem to be convincing more and more customers to take the plunge.
During a conference with the brand’s investors, Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun announced that the manufacturer had the ambition to deliver at least 100,000 SU7 electric vehicles in 2024. For this, Xiaomi has made sure to set up a fairly substantial production line.
Xiaomi factory to mass produce cars
At the heart of Xiaomi’s strategy to quickly enter the electric market is its brand new factory in Yizhuang, Beijing, which is still currently under construction.
This factory is expected to reach a total production capacity of 300,000 cars per year once construction is completed. This will take place in two phases, each of which will enable it to produce at least 150,000 vehicles per year.
With production having started at the end of the first quarter of the year, Xiaomi will likely only be able to produce “only” 100,000 units this year. The company produced more than 3,000 vehicles in March, before reaching 5,000 cars in April. She should then stabilizing at around 6,000 vehicles in the following months.
By using Tesla’s “Hyper Die-Casting” technology, which significantly reduces the number of body parts, Xiaomi would be able to produce its electric cars every two minutes.
It now remains to be seen whether Xiaomi will be able to meet its production targets, and whether manufacturing will not be delayed by modifications to the car. We know in particular that the car has experienced some problems with its brakes since its launch, so it is not not impossible that Xiaomi will make some changes on the next units.
