Xiaomi would also adopt Samsung’s 200 Mpx photo sensor

Samsung’s new cameras are turning the industry’s head. Presented for more than a year already, the models offering 200 megapixels should finally find their place in the smartphones of the end of 2022.

Samsung’s 200-megapixel Isocell sensors are coming. And if Motorola should be the very first to benefit from it, Xiaomi would be waiting in ambush to integrate it into its potential Xiaomi 12T and fight in the segment of the best smartphones for the photo.

Not all pixels are created equal

It’s more or less done: the Motorola X30 Pro would be the first to adopt Samsung’s Isocell HP1 sensor. This is the top-of-the-range model which will notably offer 2.56 µm photosites on 12.5 Mpx shots. However, it is not to this component that Xiaomi would turn for its 12T.

To believe SamMobile, the Chinese manufacturer would rather opt for the ISOCELL HP3. Another 200 megapixel sensor, recently unveiled by Samsung, which is both more compact, but also – inevitably – less efficient.

In detail, the latter will certainly offer the same definition, but on smaller pixels. In this case, we are talking about a 1/1.4 inch sensor for 2.24 µm photosites after pixel binning. This is respectively 20% and 12% less compared to the Isocell HP1.

Samsung among the last served

There is something surprising in seeing third-party manufacturers (competitors) claim advanced technologies developed by Samsung. Indeed, according to the rumor, the South Korean should not mobilize its own 200 megapixel sensors before the release of the Galaxy S23 Ultra, early next year.

Nevertheless, this in itself is nothing very shocking. Mobile imaging is an important business driver for Samsung. According to the latest Strategy Analytics report, the manufacturer takes 26% of the market shares dominated by Sony (45%) and which weighed, in 2021, 15.1 billion dollars.

Xiaomi, for its part, does not hesitate to supply itself from one as from the other. A few days ago, the announcement of the Xiaomi 12S Ultra let us discover the Sony IMX989: its new 1-inch smartphone photo sensor.

Of all the components of a camera, the photo sensor is undoubtedly the one that seems the most magical. But, no offense to the lyrical flights of marketing departments, having the largest, most defined,…
