Xiaomi’s electric car is cheaper than a Tesla Model 3, with much more range

Xiaomi has just revealed the price of the SU7, its first electric car. At the moment, it is only available in China. But it is sold less expensively than a Tesla Model 3, even though it has more autonomy.

Xiaomi SU7

That’s it, we finally know the price of Xiaomi’s first car, called SU7. During an overly long press conference broadcast on YouTube, lasting 2 hours, Xiaomi boss Lei Jun revealed a lot of details about the electric sedan. We already knew a lot of technical details, whether it was the (impressive) power of the electric motors, or the range and highway consumption of the electric car. We were even able to see it in Barcelona, during the MWC.

More autonomy than a Tesla for less money

But this time, Xiaomi has revealed the entire technical sheet, and above all, the price of the different versions of the Xiaomi SU7. The most affordable version, which offers 700 km of autonomy on the Chinese CLTC approval cycle (or approximately 625 km on the WLTP mixed cycle in Europe) with its battery with a capacity of 73.6 KWh, is available at starting from 215,900 yuan (or approximately 27,625 euros). For comparison, the Tesla Model 3 Propulsion, with its range of 606 km CLTC (or 554 km WLTP) is sold from 245,900 yuan (approximately 31,470 euros).

Be careful, however, not to take these prices at face value. In France, the Tesla Model 3 is sold from 42,990 euros. This is the case for all electric cars made in China: they are roughly twice as expensive in Europe as in their native country. For various reasons, such as taxation and import fees.

Xiaomi doesn’t stop there. The Pro version of the SU7, with its 94.3 kWh battery and its range of 830 km CLTC (around 740 km WLTP) is sold from 245,900 yuan. Or the same price as the Tesla Model 3 Propulsion which has a much smaller battery. And when we know that the battery represents between 30 to 50% of the price of an electric car, we say to ourselves that Xiaomi has hit very hard.

But the Chinese boss admits it: Xiaomi is losing money with the most affordable version of its electric car. What about this version? The man did not specify.

An even more efficient and just as affordable version

And as if that wasn’t enough, the Chinese manufacturer has also lifted the veil on the price of the Xiaomi SU7 Max. On the program: a battery with a capacity of 101 kWh, with a range of “only” 800 km CLTC (around 715 km WLTP) because of its insane power of 673 hp. This allows it to go from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.78 seconds. His price ? 299,900 yuan, or approximately 38,386 euros.

It even does better on certain points than the new Porsche Taycan Turbo. For comparison, the Tesla Model 3 Grande Autonomie is sold in China for 285,900 yuan (approximately 36,600 euros), compared to 50,990 euros in Europe. As a reminder, it integrates a battery with a capacity of 80 kWh, to offer a CLTC autonomy of 713 km, or 678 km in European WLTP standard.

For the moment, Xiaomi plans to sell its electric car only in China. But the brand’s boss did not rule out that international expansion would be a next step. In this case, we can expect prices much higher than those charged in China, but still very competitive with those of Tesla. Which are already at ultra-competitive prices.
