On Wednesday May 4, 2022, the administrative court ordered the State to pay a little more than 1.4 million euros to the City of Paris to compensate it for the damage suffered during the demonstrations of the “Yellow Vests”.
This conviction relates to “the period from November 2018 to December 2019” explained the town hall of Paris in a press release. Indeed, during this period, the city of Paris saw many demonstrations of Yellow Vests, sometimes punctuated by violence and clashes with the police.
During the first weekends of mobilization, the Arc de Triomphe had been vandalized. These images had gone around the world. Later, in March 2019, the Fouquet’s brasserie, located at the top of the Champs-Elysées, was set on fire.
I welcome the decision of the Administrative Court of Paris condemning the State to compensate the City of Paris following the damage suffered during the demonstrations of the yellow vests of 2018 and 2019.
In compensation for its damages, the State will have to pay the City 1.4 million euros.

The administrative court considered that “the damage was indeed committed during demonstrations on the public highway”. In addition, the court specifies: “If the presence of ‘black blocks’ is sometimes mentioned in the minutes, the findings also mention degradations committed by demonstrators”.
A decision which is not isolated since justice had already condemned the State to pay more than 1.2 million euros to the municipality and metropolis of Toulouse, in compensation for the damage caused by the movement of Yellow Vests.
