A major success in the United States, the Yellowjackets series has arrived in France. The story follows a women’s soccer team en route to a national tournament in Seattle. While flying over Canada, the plane carrying the young athletes crashes in the middle of the forest. The survivors will remain on their own for 19 months.
Throughout its plot, the program alternates the past and the present. The series follows the misadventures of heroines abandoned in the nineties and the consequences of this accident, today, in 2021. Between drama, survivalist thriller and cannibal horror, Yellowjackets is a real addictive television object.
Unsurprisingly, the story is fiction and is inspired in particular by the classic His Majesty of the Flieswritten by William Golding and published in 1954. However, an authentic news item is at the origin of this idea of a plane crash.
It is a tragedy worthy of a horror film. On October 12, 1972, an aircraft carried a Uruguayan rugby team and their loved ones to Santiago, Chile. The weather is terrible and the crew lands in Mendoza, Argentina, for the night. The next day, the craft took off again, but the right wing struck a mountain. Passengers crash in the Andes region.
Between the crash and the arrival of help, two months pass. The color of the aircraft does not facilitate its location. Out of 45 people – including crew and passengers – 16 survived. In addition to the extreme climate, the victims must endure hunger. They attempt to eat the leather strips from luggage, but these are not edible.

Faced with the lack of food, they decide to eat the body of the pilot, Julio César Ferradas, who died in the crash. Roberto Cannessa, a medical student, explains to the others how to proceed to cut up the corpses. Other bodies are devoured afterwards.
On December 22 and 23 the survivors were rescued by the authorities. After their rescue, the crash victims refuse to admit their actions. However, the truth comes out during a press conference. Faced with the exceptional situation, this survival cannibalism is forgiven. Pope Paul VI absolves the survivors.
Twenty years later, a film adapted from this news item was released in cinemas. He is intitulated alive – The Survivors in French version – and has Ethan Hawke, John Malkovich and Josh Hamilton in its cast. Director JA Bayona (The Impossible, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom) is currently preparing Society of the Snow, a new feature film on the subject planned for Netflix.
