Yes, he’s definitely a Wookie Jedi in The Acolyte

The new series The Acolyte will feature the reappearance of the Sith. But above all, this will be the opportunity to see for the first time a Wookie Jedi in action in a live-action Star Wars work.

Series The Acolyte will be broadcast exclusively on Disney+, from June 4, 2024. The streaming service is available from 5.99 euros per month, or from 29.99 euros per month with the Canal + Ciné Séries offer.

The first trailer for The Acolyte made an impression with the handling of yellow lightsabers by Jedi knights. Other scenes also challenged the public. We think of actress Carrie-Ann Moss struggling with what looks like a killer, or even signs of a resurgence of the Sith. The red lightsaber twirling in the woods is one.

Then, once the obvious elements have been noted, it’s time to look in more detail at what the trailer has to offer us. Among the pleasant surprises is the presence of a Wookie Jedi — yes, you read that correctly. The television series will introduce for the first time a sort of Chewbacca wielding the arcana of the Jedi order.

The first appearance of the Wookie in the trailer does not immediately let you know that he is indeed a Jedi. The saber on his belt is not visible in the image. The other clues (his outfit, his cut) are also too tenuous to deduce anything with certainty. But, another plan validates the status of the Wookie.

The other scene indeed shows the Wookie with his comrades in arms. All wear the characteristic robe of the Jedi order. We can even see a lightsaber on the belt of one of them. The official website of Star Wars drives the point home, confirming that he is a Jedi knight — We also learn his name: Kelnacca.

For those who do not know well Star Wars, this Wookie Jedi will be a first. In films as in live-action series, this will indeed be unprecedented. Members of this species have until now been depicted as smugglers (Chewbacca), bounty hunters (Krrsantan) or warriors (Revenge of the Sith).

Jedi wookies exist in Star Wars

But for those who have had the opportunity to explore the extended universe, this will certainly not be a first. The best-known representative here is certainly Lowbacca, a Jedi knight whose particularity is to be the nephew of… Chewbacca. His story arc occurs during the New Jedi Order and the Yuuzhan Vong invasion.

Lowbacca, however, is no longer a canon character since 2012 and the rejection of the extended universe by Disney. The same goes for Kirlocca, who was a Wookie Jedi Master and his Ruhr counterpart, or the Jedi Knight Vorlocca. Others have been maintained or added. These include Padawan Burryaga Agaburry, Jedi Master Arkoff, Padawan Gungi and Jedi Master Tyvokka.
