With Argylle, Matthew Vaughn dreams of a multiverse of espionage
In Argyle, the character played by Henry Cavill is a fictional spy imagined by Elly Conway, whose eponymous literary saga is a great success. The last scene of the film is intriguing: while the novelist presents her latest volume to her fans, Henry Cavill appears in her reality. We won’t know much more.
The post-credits scene, for its part, takes the form of an equally intriguing flashback. She begins by showing us a pub with an evocative name: The King’s Man. Inside, after a lunar discussion, the keeper provides a box to a young man, who introduces himself under the name of Aubrey Argylle. He thus recovers a pistol and a silencer (for the spy side). The message is clear: the idea is to connect the Kingsman and Argylle universes together. Finally, Matthew Vaughn teases the arrival of another Argylle film, apparently based on the first volume by Elly Conway.
Is there a real desire to imagine a multiverse of espionage on Matthew Vaughn’s side? Yes. He revealed this intention in an interview with Josh Horowitz for the Happy Sad Confused podcast: “ Like I said before for Argylle, we have a book coming and we’re already planning Argylle 2. So there’s a universe and we’re trying to emulate Marvel superheroes with spies. We have Kingsman on one side, Argylle on the other, and we have an idea to bring them together. »
We recall that the Kingsman saga is today made up of two films and a prologue (called The King’s Man). Several projects are already planned: one to conclude the Eggsy arc and a second prologue. If you add Argylle 2, it starts to take a lot of pieces to put it all together. Note also that Kingsman And Argyle already share a few elements: Samuel L. Jackson and Sofia Boutella, although they play different roles (unless?).
