Yoann Kavege’s excellent Moon Deer wins the Science Fiction Comics Prize

The Science Fiction Comics Prize, of which Numerama is the partner, has just revealed the big winner of this first edition. This is Yoann Kavege, for Moon Deer.

French science fiction is also expressed in comics. It is these artists that the SF Comics Prize, the first of its kind, wishes to reward. Numerama is associated with this project created by Lloyd Chéry via the label and podcast It’s more than SF. The jury of professionals was made up of a member of the editorial staff of Numerama (Marcus Dupont-Besnard), as well as journalists Charles Knappek (LivresHebdo) and Jérôme Lachasse (BFMTV culture). Added a jury of podcast listeners It’s more than SFrandomly drawn upon application.

From a narrow selection of around ten titles published in 2022, the jury first came to the choice of three finalists:

  • Bolshoi Arena3 volumes, Boulet and Aseyn (Delcourt)
  • Moon DeerYoann Kavege (Bubble editions)
  • Renaissance5 volumes, Fred Duval, EMEM, Fred Blanchard (Dargaud)

After intense deliberations, the choice fell on an extraordinary comic: Moon Deer. The announcement was made to Yoann Kavege at the gallery Buy Art in Bastille (Paris), where his work — the original plates of Moon Deer — will therefore be exposed. And he receives the prize of 1,000 euros.

The silent and poignant odyssey of a small deer in space

Moon Deer is none other than the odyssey of a little deer astronaut, whose mission is to protect a strange egg at all costs. In a desolate cosmos, he is hunted by a mysterious huntress. This surprising pitch is approached in a poetic way, more than humorous, by Yoann Kavege: the journey is silent. Little talkative, comics are a succession of expressive paintings. The refined narration participates in the tour de force. Until an unpredictable end.

But what distinguishes Moon Deerand confirmed the jury’s choice, it is of course the artistic touch: Yoann Kavege’s drawings are breathtakingly beautiful and particularly meticulous.

The story behind the creation of the comic is itself extraordinary, because it was financed via an Ulule campaign (at 458% of the objective).
