“You can be an athlete and a disabled person”: in Paris, a whole day dedicated to disabled sport

This is a world first: this Saturday was a day dedicated to disabled sports, place de la Bastille in Paris. This day also officially launched the first events linked to the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games. This first edition had a very specific objective and above all wanted to raise public awareness of disabled sport.

“Do great performances even when disabled”

Scooter, car and bus gave way, for the space of a day, to the long jump track, the basketball court and the fencing podium around the July column. The playground is ideal for French Paralympic athletes who come to present their disciplines under the amazed gaze of the spectators. “I find it quite impressive. We often see the practice of athletes who are able-bodied, and I also find it interesting to see how it works when you are an athlete with a disability”, explains a young girl.

Noa, had never seen a Paralympic skateboard before that day. Under his eyes, the young Welshwoman Lily Race performs acrobatic tricks with her chair. “I saw that we could try a little sports that are on the forecourt. I find it super interesting because we do not realize when we are not in the situation of the person”, estimates Noa .

Put yourself in the shoes of others, but also and above all see beyond the handicap. This is the most important thing for Mehdi: both legs amputated last November, he is now in the process of joining the French Paralympic kayak team. “When I’m in a kayak you can’t see my handicap”, points out the athlete. “It’s really my arms, my shoulders and my back that keep me going. You can be an athlete and a disabled person, and perform well even if you’re disabled.” Performances that may make France shine at the Paralympic Games. See you in Paris on August 28, 2024!
