You use Facebook Messenger, but you can’t stand its propensity to over-compress all the photos you share anymore? Good news, all this will soon be history.
While WhatsApp continues to gain features week after week, Meta is finally interested in its other instant messaging application: Facebook Messenger. In a press release published on April 9, 2024, the firm announced changes to the sharing of photos and videos on the famous blue bubble app.
Better quality photos and more convenient albums
First, users of the service will soon be able to send each other photos in better quality thanks to a small “HD” button which will prevent your photos from being too compressed. Technically Messenger has allowed the sending of “HD” photos since 2017, but the quality of sending actually depended a lot on the quality of the connection of the sender and the recipient. Now, with the HD button, you can be assured that your photos will be sent in 4096 x 4096 px. If you do not select the option, your photos will be sent in 2048 x 2048 px, or with a lower resolution if your device is not capable of better.
To shoehorn Facebook features into Messenger, Meta also announced the possibility of creating photo albums directly in your group conversations. When you select multiple photos, you will soon be able to choose the option “Add to album» and Messenger will create a small folder of tidy photos for you rather than spamming the conversation with 15 photos in a row. All people participating in the conversation will be able to add, delete or download the photos in the album.
The sending limit increased to 100 MB
Finally, to further improve its file sharing service, Messenger will increase the limit for sending files from 25 MB to 100 MB on its service. This will not only allow you to share complex PDF or Word files, but also to send short videos without having to compress them or cut them into several pieces. Capturing video in Full HD or 4K actually tends to increase the size of the files.
Most of these features are currently being deployed, so if you can’t take advantage of them yet, don’t panic, it should arrive in the coming weeks. Note that a feature allowing you to share your profile via QR code will also debut on Messenger shortly. Meta finally puts its instant chat apps on an equal footing.
