Following an investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the federal Department of Transportation responsible for road safety in the United States, Tesla does a formal backpedal.

It will no longer be possible to play with the Passenger Play feature when the affected Tesla models are in motion.

Play or drive, you have to choose again

Tesla is backing up. Under an investigation by the American Highway Safety Agency (NHTSA), the firm of Elon Musk will update its software to prevent drivers from playing video games on some of its models when driving . The regulator announced that it had opened an investigation into 580,000 Tesla Model 3, S, X and Y and their Passenger Play functionality, considered dangerous.

Although aimed at passengers, NHTSA found the feature to be a source of distraction for drivers, as inattentiveness behind the wheel caused 3,142 fatalities in the United States in 2019. From now on, it will no longer be possible to launch games when the car is running. Tesla has locked its functionality to make it unusable when the vehicle is in motion, which was already the case before an update last summer.
