Sony has just rolled out a new PlayStation 5 beta that adds a number of new features, including support for Dolby Atmos HDMI devices.
Sony has released a beta firmware update for the PS5, which offers a host of new audio and accessibility options. The update is already rolling out to select users in the US, Canada, Japan, UK, Germany, and France, before it rolls out to all users within a few weeks.
On the program, several new features, including the ability to assign a second controller as an “assistance controller” to a single account, allowing players to collaborate on the same screen. Additionally, users can now enable haptic feedback when navigating the PS5 system menu, which improves immersion for visually or hearing impaired players. However, these are not the most notable additions of this new version.

PS5 update will improve console sound
The major novelty added by the update is support for Dolby Atmos HDMI devices such as soundbars, televisions or home theater systems. This will allow the console to pass the 3D Audio feature from the PS5 to Atmos devices by outputting the 3D Audio channels to Atmos enabled speakers.
In other words, if you had a Dolby Atmos sound system, you couldn’t take advantage of the upward-firing speakers and other surround sound features of the equipment until then. With this new version, Sony will therefore correct this defect, and thus improve the sound reproduction of games that support 3D audio, or Dolby Atmos compatible series and films on Netflix or Apple TV.
Finally, note that Sony is also adding support for larger M.2 SSDs to the PS5. You will now be able to fit an 8TB SSD to the console. Previously, you had to settle for “only” 4 TB of additional SSDs.
