young and less qualified people more often dissatisfied

The survey by the Directorate of Animation and Research, Studies and Statistics of the Ministry of Labor (Dares) published Tuesday October 10 and conducted in 2022 has the merit of raising awareness of the extent of the differences in motives and levels of dissatisfaction with the job, which concerns more than one in three employees: 36% of all people who work (excluding work-study programs and internships) declare at least one reason for dissatisfaction with the job. with regard to their employment (“ More than one in three people have a reason for dissatisfaction with their job », “Focus” n° 54, October 2023, Dares).

Freer in the exercise of their profession, 23% of non-employees express reasons for dissatisfaction, significantly less than permanent employees (32%). At the very top of the scale of dissatisfaction, we find fixed-term contracts (86%) and temporary workers (81%): it is true that the positions offered under temporary contracts often combine handicaps (low-skilled, difficult and poorly paid).

Another lesson: the first reason for dissatisfaction is linked to insufficient working hours (21% of all respondents complain about this)… On closer inspection, this average is once again pushed upwards by employees who have signed temporary contracts: 34% of fixed-term contracts and 44% of temporary workers aspire to work more. Logical when we know that these contracts are often associated with part-time work and insufficient or irregular income.

Same observation with regard to employment, which constitutes the second reason for dissatisfaction: 12% of all respondents wish to change, mainly to improve their working conditions, increase their income, change profession, sector or as an employer, or because they want a more interesting position.

Qualification level

Around this average of 12%, they are positioned at the two extremes: 3% of self-employed people want to change jobs while 23% of temporary workers aspire to do so. This gap is probably explained by the fact that the status of self-employed and the jobs that result from it generally result from a lifestyle choice, whereas that of temporary employment is more often made.

Furthermore, 59% of temporary workers and 78% of fixed-term workers complain of having had to sign a temporary contract. The weight of these two categories and the level of responses are enough to bring the temporary employment contract up to third place among the reasons for dissatisfaction for all respondents (8%).
