The Last Generation strikes again at a well-known building in Berlin – the activists are painting a slogan in orange on the Chancellery. The federal police intervened and began investigating property damage.

Young activists from the last generation smeared the facade of the Federal Chancellery with orange paint this morning. A photo published by the protest group shows a large lettering with the words “Help! Your children” and numerous handprints. Several activists lay on the ground in front of the wall, others sat, as can be seen in the photo.

According to the Berlin police, 16 people between the ages of 13 and 16 were temporarily arrested to check their identities. Police operations were still ongoing in the morning. The federal police have initiated an investigation on suspicion of damage to property.

Those involved are calling on the federal government to become aware of its responsibility for the young generation with regard to climate change and to “finally meet it,” as it was said in a statement from Last Generation.

The state of Berlin is suing over the paint attack on the Brandenburg Gate

In Berlin last year, the last generation had already daubed the Brandenburg Gate, also with orange paint. The monument had to be extensively cleaned. As recently became known, the state of Berlin is demanding 142,000 euros from the group. A corresponding civil lawsuit is directed against 13 members of the climate group. “Vandalism has consequences,” said Finance Senator Stefan Evers.

According to the tax authorities, the climate demonstrators initially agreed to pay for the cleaning of the Brandenburg Gate. However, the activists did not comply with the request for an initial payment totaling 115,000 euros.

The Last Generation also recently attracted attention with actions in Austria and France. She also plans to take part in the European elections on June 9th. To this end, it wants to compete as an “other political association”. In a program published online, the Last Generation calls for the Europe-wide introduction of randomly drawn social councils and the fastest possible exit from coal, gas and oil.
