The obligation to verify the age of users of porn sites could well scare away some giants of the sector, such as Pornhub and YouPorn.

The government has stepped up for a year against the ease of access to pornographic content for minors. If the websites don’t cooperate, they might just get suspended by Arcom. Unless they decide to leave the national territory on their own!

Mindgeek indicates the exit door

The new provisions taken by the State to impose a procedure for verifying the age of users of pornographic websites do not delight all professionals in the field. If a producer such as Dorcel is willing to show goodwill and test the famous double anonymity, American operators are more reluctant.

The investment fund Mindgeek, which owns Pornhub and YouPorn, has just mentioned the possibility of stopping its activities in France, arguing the technical impossibility induced by the new law passed. The Minister Delegate for the Digital Transition Jean-Noël Barrot contradicted this idea on Twitter by saying that ” the tools exist “, without citing any.

VPN for everyone?

It must be said that everything that has been proposed so far raises fears about the potential theft of data from users of pornographic sites. An intimate corner that is surely one of those that the citizen most wants to keep secret. If no process were to convince the platforms, and if the government persisted in its desire to impose age verification procedures, the two sites mentioned, and many others, could well leave France in the months to come.

A departure that would obviously smack of hypocrisy, because it will always be possible to access any site prohibited in France by using a VPN to locate oneself abroad, or even to change the DNS. So many ways of doing things that are not yet integrated into the navigation of the average Internet user, but which could well become quite common in the future, as the recent example of Utah shows.
