Your Apple TV will better support VPN apps for streaming with tvOS 17

We recently discussed the main new features announced by Apple on tVOS 17but one of them, although very relevant, was made particularly discreet: the support of third-party VPNs by Apple TV.

Announced through a simple mention at the bottom of the press release summarizing the new features expected with tvOS, this support for VPNs should render a great service to users of SVoD services wishing to circumvent certain limitations of these platforms.

VPNs coming soon to your Apple TV

We learn that Apple will allow developers to offer applications on Apple TV to configure a third-party VPN, such as NordVPN, Surfshark, Cyberghost VPN, HMA or even ExpressVPN. As iGen points out, the firm explains that this novelty is interesting for businesses and education, but it is likely that users of SVoD services are actually the most interested in this possibility.

By means of a VPN configured on Apple TV, it will indeed be possible for them to free themselves from geoblocking to consult the American or Japanese catalogs (for example) of their favorite streaming applications, and thus obtain access to content that is not available on their catalog in France.

Note that this practice is contrary to the conditions of use of these services, but it remains widespread and tacitly tolerated by many market players. Clearly, we must be prepared for VPN applications to flourish soon on the Apple TV App Store… at least when tvOS 17 is available.

Remember that tvOS 17 should arrive on our Apple TVs starting this fall, with good news as a bonus: its expected deployment both on the latest Apple TV 4K models and on Apple TV HD, launched in 2015 and equipped with the aging Apple A8 chip, once found on the iPhone 6.
