For music lovers who prefer to listen to their favorite songs without the Internet, YouTube Music has finally updated its website on PC with the rollout of offline downloading support. This new feature puts the streaming service’s mobile and desktop experiences on an equal footing, by allowing you to save songs and playlists locally to listen to them anytime.

YouTube has been testing online uploads for a while now, but the option appears to have gone mainstream since March 29. Some users are now greeted with a message “ New ! Download music to listen offline » next to their Library tab when they visit music.youtube.com, although the rollout appears to still be in progress.

YouTube Music finally lets you listen to music offline

The procedure for saving music offline is simple. Simply go to the page of an album, playlist or individual song that you want to make available for offline listening. You will find a download button between the “Save to Library” option and the three-dot menu. Press this button and the content will be downloaded to your computer.

Once the songs, albums or playlists are downloaded, they will be conveniently organized in a new “Downloads” section of your YouTube Music library on the web. You can also filter this downloaded content by playlists, podcasts, songs or albums for easier navigation when you’re not online.

For those who already use the YouTube Music mobile app, this new web feature will be a must-have addition if you also own a computer. The mobile version has long allowed offline listening by downloading content via WiFi or cellular data. But the lack of a native desktop app meant that this option wasn’t available for desktop listening sessions.

Please note that any songs, albums or playlists you download from the web count towards YouTube Music’s overall download limit of 10 devices. This shouldn’t be a problem for most individual users, but could impact those who share a family subscription across multiple accounts and machines.
