YouTube has been waging a bitter battle against ad blockers for years. The company is now actively taking action against ad blocker users by no longer showing them videos. On mobile devices, however, you were still able to handle advertising with third-party apps well. But apparently not for long, because YouTube has now confirmed in a statement that it is now also taking measures against third-party apps that block advertising.

This means that “less well-known” ad blockers are now also being targeted by the video platform. If you use third-party apps to block advertising on YouTube in the future, you will have to expect various penalties. It can happen that there are problems with buffering (loading videos) or that you can generally no longer watch videos on YouTube. Instead, you will receive the error message “The following content is not available in this app.”

However, YouTube does not cite its own loss of profits as the reason for this step. Instead, the company blames the platform’s creators and points out that they will no longer be legally compensated for their content if you block advertising:

We want to emphasize that our Terms of Service do not allow third-party apps to disable ads. This prevents creators from being rewarded for their viewership. Ads on YouTube support creators and enable billions of people around the world to use the streaming service.

Although the company understands that many of you also want an ad-free YouTube experience, it recommends the YouTube Premium subscription. This means you can switch off advertising on the video portal completely, but at 11.99 euros per month the price is quite steep. For comparison: Disney+ charges just as much for the premium subscription. However, with the streaming service you get access to hundreds of high-quality series and films.
