Youtube has started testing with certain users a new feature allowing them to filter the videos displayed according to the dominant colors of their thumbnail. An initiative as curious as it is original.
Organize the videos displayed on the home page of the YouTube application which is also arriving soon for the Apple Vision Pro according to the dominant colors visible on their thumbnails. This is the surprising function that the platform is currently testing with certain users. Preview on Android by 9to5Google, this function has nevertheless been extended to iOS. We were indeed able to test it on the YouTube application (v19.04.3) installed on an iPhone 15 Pro.
When YouTube sorts feed videos… by color
This new feature comes in some cases in the form of a “ Looking for something new? » which offers users “ Create a stream of videos based on their color, to have fun exploring them “.
For our part, we mainly had to deal with three sorting filters by color: red, green, blue. These are installed directly in the top carousel of the YouTube homepage, alongside keywords that match your preferences. A simple click on one of these three options then displays videos whose shade actually corresponds to the chosen color.

An original function
Note, however, that the videos displayed match your interests, your subscriptions, and the type of content you are used to watching. Clearly, these are not random videos. In our case, by clicking on red, YouTube, for example, searched for concert videos using this shade.
A priori, the colors used by YouTube for this sorting mode are not linked to the content of the video, which often leads to very eclectic groupings. Finally, it seems that the color chosen by the user is sometimes used by YouTube as an accent color on the interface. A peculiarity that we were, however, unable to observe for ourselves.
In a world where YouTube dominates the video streaming landscape, many are looking for more privacy-friendly, ad-free alternatives. Fortunately, there are solutions that meet these needs while providing a rich user experience and without sacrificing the plethora of content.
