Youtuber builds his own graphics card for 30 US dollars

With the TurtleCard 100X, a Youtuber has built himself a weak GPU for 30 US dollars.

A graphics card is still a big investment even after the chip crisis has subsided. Expensive GPU chips, RAM modules and complex cooling make the graphics cards complex and correspondingly expensive. A young Youtuber now wants to prove that a graphics card can also be built for less than 30 US dollars. The “cheapest graphics card in the world” is created as part of a multi-part video series on YouTube.

“extremely terrible designed”

According to the Youtuber “TheCodingTurtle”, the components required for the construction should have cost less than 30 US dollars. The necessary knowledge comes from his work as a game programmer and mod developer for “Minecraft” and other titles. The CodingTurtle now wants to start a new project with its self-made graphics card “TurtleCard 100X”. By the way, the X in the name of the GPU stands for “extremely terribly designed”. The hobbyist is not particularly convinced of his GPU.

10MHz GPU clock and 32KB VRAM

This is not surprising, after all the GPU is supposed to reach the speed of an older Geforce GTX 1060 from Nvidia. However, it is doubtful whether this comparison is true. After all, the TurtleCard 100X only has a 10 MHz chip, plus 32 KB of video memory and a maximum resolution of 800 x 600 pixels. The Geforce GTX 1060, on the other hand, offers a chip clock of 1,506 MHz, 3 GB of VRAM and allows 4K resolutions.

bird on the monitor

The Youtuber’s GPU can currently only display colored lines on the monitor. Nevertheless, the hobbyist celebrates his success. Now the connection of the GPU with the RAM chips is still on the plan. The aim of the action is to display a bird on the screen.
