Ys X: Nordics Reveals New Details About Adol’s Upcoming Adventures

Officially announced on December 15, Ys X: Nordics today gives more details on the game through an interview of the president of Falcom, Toshihiro Kondo, by the Japanese magazine Famitsu.

A maritime adventure with the Switch in mind

Thanks to Gematsu and Ryokutya2089, we are entitled to some loose details for Ys X, an opus which celebrates the 35th anniversary of the franchise. Also remember that this is also the first Falcom game to be developed on Switch at the same time as the PlayStation versions.

Here is what we learn from this interview:

  • “Nordics” is a term for “people from the north” (an inspiration coming from Scandinavian countries)
  • Adol is 17 years old here.
  • Ys X takes place after the events of Ys I and II and just before Ys IV (Adol apparently travels here to reach Celceta).
  • Doctor Flair Rall will be back (this is a character that appears in Ys II and Ys IV)
  • Falcom deliberately chose fairly young protagonists in order to deliver a story that speaks to Nintendo Switch audiences.
  • It is confirmed that we will only have two playable characters, Adol and the Ax Girl. We are nevertheless promised fairly dense action and lots of movements to perform.
  • There are cities to explore but your base will always be your ship.
  • The combat system offers a single player mode (the classic and dynamic gameplay of the series where Adol fights alone) and a “combination mode” which slows down the pace, but lets you perform big attacks in pairs.
  • The defense will have a more important place. Blocks will fill up a revenge gauge which will increase your attack power.
  • Falcom will particularly take care of the difficulty so that a wide audience can appreciate it.
  • There will be more freedom for mid-height combos.
  • 20% of the game is dedicated to handling your boat. There will be maps dedicated to exploration and naval battles.

Toshihiro Kondo also specifies that this is a challenge for the company which wants to conquer a new audience on Switch while wanting to please fans. We hope that Falcom will find this balance even if we can trust them to bring us a very good JRPG after the excellent Ys VIII and Ys IX.

We should have gameplay on video around the beginning of the year. Ys X: Nordics is expected in 2023 on PS4, PS5 and Nintendo Switch in Japan.
