Elversberg gives Schalke the next setback

Schalke 04 missed their third win in a row in the second Bundesliga. The Royal Blues are quickly 2-0 behind against Elversberg – even the goal isn’t enough. In the top game between St. Pauli and Hannover 96, little happens on the field, then there is turmoil in the stands.

Royal blue disillusionment: FC Schalke 04 has suffered a bitter setback in the relegation battle of the 2nd Bundesliga. Coach Karel Geraerts’ team lost 1:2 (1:2) after a disappointing performance against newly promoted SV Elversberg and missed their third win in a row. Over the course of the weekend, Schalke can still slip to 16th place in the relegation zone.
Paul Stock (7th) and Jannik Rochelt (21st) scored the goals for Elversberg, which continued its remarkable debut season in the second division. With 21 points, the newcomer is at least temporarily in fifth place in the table. Kenan Karaman (35th) scored for the hosts. Shortly before kick-off, Geraerts had to change his starting lineup again: According to the club, Schalke goalkeeper Ralf Fährmann “felt something in his muscle” during the warm-up. Justin Heekeren replaced the 35-year-old.
And he saw a catastrophic initial phase for his teammates: After a solo, Elversbergs Stick took the early lead completely unchallenged, 14 minutes later Rochelt increased the score with a great shot to make it 2-0 from the Saarlanders’ point of view. The Royal Blues then showed improvement, with Karaman heading the score to 1-2 before the break.
In the second half, Schalke pushed for an equalizer when Bryan Lasme hit the crossbar from a tight angle (58′). Two minutes later, Elversberg keeper Nicolas Kristof prevented Karaman’s second header. But the guests also remained dangerous.
FC St. Pauli – Hannover 96 0-0
FC St. Pauli missed out on a win in the top game. Coach Fabian Hürzeler’s team drew 0-0 against Hannover 96 in a northern duel that was briefly interrupted due to riots in the fan block and is the only team in the league still unbeaten after the 13th game of the season. However, city rivals Hamburger SV could with a win on Saturday (1 p.m./Sky and in the ntv.de live ticker) At Holstein Kiel draw level on points with St. Pauli.
St. Pauli missed its fifth home win in a row and remained without a goal for the first time since the end of August. Hannover, currently third in the table, has been waiting for a win for four away games, but earned the point with a largely concentrated defensive performance.
The hosts only had one real chance in the first half – but it was tough. After a cross from Elias Saad, Johannes Eggestein shot from the turn (16th), but Hannover’s Ron-Robert Zieler parried the shot well. Another attempt from Saad (36th) flew past.
St. Pauli then pushed vehemently for the opening goal and repeatedly won the ball in promising positions. However, in the crucial moments there was usually a lack of precision and calm. In the final phase the game was temporarily interrupted because there was turmoil in the away block.
