Zippyshare closes after 17 years of loyal service

This is the end of Zippyshare. A true web institution since 2006, the site announced its closure yesterday in a short blog post. The administrators mention the rise in the price of electricity, but also an aging model, unable to cope with the democratization of adblocks.

There are these sites whose closure creates a small twinge in the heart. We remember in particular the judgment of Popcorn Time, which has certainly always flirted with illegality, but which had permanently settled in millions of homes. Today, another pillar of the web is saying goodbye. In a short message, particularly modest, Zippyshare administrators announced the final end of the platform.

If you’ve been on the internet since 2006, you’ve most likely, consciously or not, crossed paths with Zippyshare. The site has extensive popularized mainstream hosting platforms, on which users can make files available, which can then be downloaded via a link and, in some cases, protected by a password. But it is precisely this revolutionary formula that hastened its downfall.

Farewell Zippyshare

“We have decided to stop the project at the end of the month”, explain the creators of the site, who put forward several reasons that led them to this decision. The first is its dated business model. Since it went online, Zippyshare has made it possible to host and download files for free. In return, users agree, in theory, to view some advertisements.

In theory only, because this formula no longer works today. On the one hand, Zippyshare explains that it recorded a drop in activity these last years. To make matters worse, the rise of adblocks hurt his finances. The site ended up in a ” vicious circle ” being forced to place more ads, de facto driving away more users, and so on.

Finallyrising electricity prices has finished completing the platform. “We can no longer afford to maintain the site”soberly concludes the team, after admitting that “nobody needs a dinosaur like us”. A dinosaur, yes, but one that helped build today’s web.
