Everything should have been better under Heiko Vogel. But Basel’s restart after a messed up season and the dismissal of Timo Schultz failed to materialize against Stade-Lausanne-Ouchy, the previous bottom of the table. The Vaudois, who came to St. Jakob-Park with a record of 6 goals in 7 games, got the 3 points and moved past the “Bebbi” in the table.
At the end of a bloodless performance by their favorites, the Basel fans did what they had already done during the break: they covered the team (and probably also the club management) with a shrill concert of whistles. The dismissal of Schultz was met with incomprehension among some supporters.
In the final phase, the defeat became an embarrassment for the Basel team. In the 94th minute Mergim Qarri made it 3-0, in the 96th Florian Danho could have made it 4-0 from the penalty point, but failed because of Marwin Hitz. Arnau Comas saw a red card for his emergency brake foul.
Barry again as a symbolic figure
A scene after an hour was also symptomatic of the home team’s miserable performance: Thierno Barry was played in a promising position and only had Lausanne-Ouchy goalie Dany Da Silva in front of him. To the dismay of his teammates, the substitute striker stumbled for no apparent reason and missed the big chance.
A rebellion against the defeat was only rudimentary after Elies Mahmoud’s 0-2 defeat by the guests in the 68th minute. Jean-Kévin Augustin was unlucky with a shot that hit the outside post. But overall, after the goals conceded, the Basel team seemed too inhibited and too unstable to create anything offensively.
At the start of the game, FCB still had chances. Djordje Jovanovic could have taken the lead in the 4th minute, but came a little too late after a cross from Mohamed Dräger and put the ball next to the goal. Juan Gauto also had a chance to make it 1-0.
Ajdini opens the score
Lausanne-Ouchy, which fought back with fighting spirit, did better in the 21st minute. Alban Ajdini created the necessary space with a clever body deception and beat Marwin Hitz with a precise low shot.
Vogel will have to go over the books in the coming days of training. The audience’s whistles are perhaps the least of his problems when it comes to his sporting prospects.
