What sounds like a paradise for car buyers is said to have actually been planned by the Ministry of Transport. But the boss in the house disagrees.
Update from May 10, 2022: The hope of high support for e-car buyers is over that quickly: After internal plans from the Ministry of Transport became known to extend the environmental bonus and increase the federal share to up to 10,800 euros, Minister of Transport Volker Wissing has now publicly expressed. The Handelsblatt had first reported on the significant possible plus for buyers of an electric car (more on this below in the article). It should be included as one of 54 measures in the Ministry of Transport’s emergency package that is intended to reduce CO₂ emissions in the transport sector. As we noted in our first article, it was either way unlikely that the plans could become reality. With the clarification from Volker Wissing, the attempt should now be off the table.

Buy an e-car quickly to collect the full environmental bonus? This could turn out to be a mistake. Not only the long waiting times for new electric cars are now thwarting the plan, but also new plans by Transport Minister Volker Wissing (FDP). More money for e-cars: environmental bonus could rise to over 10,000 euros
There is talk of almost doubling the federal share: Instead of paying 6,000 euros for battery-electric e-cars with a list price of less than 40,000 euros, buyers should make up their own minds to 10,800 euros can look forward to. In addition, according to the plan, the end should not be as early as 2025, but the funding should be paid until 2027. The manufacturer’s share should remain at a maximum of 3,000 euros, but will also be extended (source: Handelsblatt).
For more expensive e-cars with a purchase price of up to 60,000 euros, the subsidy should be increased from the current 5,000 euros to up to 8,000 euros. But not every customer can demand the full environmental bonus. From the second half of 2023, it should become a condition to scrap a combustion engine that is at least 11 years old. Experts doubt the new environmental bonus for electric cars
However, it is by no means certain that this will actually happen – and it will happen soon several reasons speak against it. The plans have already been evaluated by experts. In the committees, they are considered far less promising than apparently in the Ministry of Transport.
