THE motherboards the most high-end ones have always been rich in many features. MSI introduces one to increase the temperature limit of processors.

Several sources mention the implementation by MSI of a new option in the BIOS of its Z790 ACE MAX motherboard, a model designed for the release of Intel’s Raptor Lake Refresh processors.

An option which could suggest that said processors heat up a little more than the previous generation. Finally, that is our conclusion. It’s up to you to make up your mind.

Exceed the protection limit

Until now, the temperature limit for an Intel processor is 107°C. When this value is reached, said processor goes into “protection mode” and its power is seriously reduced, even if the throttling principle is often felt before that, from 100°C.

Obviously, if due to its very nature a processor is hotter than another, it has a greater chance of reaching, or even exceeding, this limit. For example, it is much more difficult to hit what English speakers call the throttling point on a Core i5-13600K than on a Core i9-13900K.

Such a limit is obviously designed to counterbalance a cooling solution that would be a little tight. Conversely, overclocking fans can be hampered: they know their hardware well and such a limit can prevent them from reaching – temporarily – the desired peaks.

CPU fast throttle threshold »

Officially, it is therefore in response to this need to go ever higher among overclocking enthusiasts that MSI introduced the “ CPU fast throttle threshold “. The principle is very simple: the protection limit (TjMax) of the processor is raised to 115°C.

This is of course an option to activate – it is not by default – and it is found in the Overclocking/Advanced CPU Configuration menu, so that users don’t stumble upon it by chance. Still, if we believe Wccftechsaid option would only be available on the 14th generation of Intel Core processors, the Raptor Lake Refresh.

On the other hand, our colleagues emphasize that MSI has the idea of offering the option on other motherboards, whether they are equipped with the Z790 chipset like this ACE MAX or the Z690 chipset. Remember that this chipset is also capable of accepting Raptor Lake Refresh.

If Alder Lake or Raptor Lake did not need to authorize an increase to 115°C of this TjMax value and if Raptor Lake Refresh seems to require it, it is because the 14th generation of Intel processors heats up more, even if only for brief moments.

Please note that according to all available information, the embargo on testing is October 17 at 3 p.m. The appointment is therefore made.
