1500 tons of e-scrap – “recycling world champions” are at home in Vienna

World class performance! 1500 tons of electronic waste are processed in the dismantling and recycling center in the 14th district. Supposed waste is repaired or broken down into all its individual parts and then recycled.

Vogtgasse 29 in Penzing: in front of the building are waist-high lattice boxes filled with demolished televisions, printers, radios and microwaves. Inside, around 100 workers are busy at their tables in the workshop, dismantling more electronic waste down to the last screw – welcome to the Dismantling and Recycling Center (DRZ), where the “Viennese recycling world champions” are at home! “In Vienna On average, more than 8,000 tons of old electronic devices are collected each year. Around 1,500 tons of this end up here with us,” says Christian Frankenberg, head of waste management at the “Krone” local inspection. The DRZ motto is: dismantling, upcycling and reuse. “We dismantle it, rebuild it so it can be reused,” says Frankenberg. Or there are handmade products that are sold in the shop. But the recycling world champions not only do a top job for the environment, but also for people who have not had it so easy in their professional lives to gain a foothold in the labor market. This also applies to Oliver L. (38), who no longer wants to pursue his apprenticeship as a painter and prefers to work here. “Separate waste makes sense.” The father of the family said during the “Krone” visit: “I completely disassemble around 35 printers every working day. Since I started here, I’ve become much more aware of the environment and the garbage problem. At home, I separate the rubbish meticulously. It’s not difficult at all and really makes a lot of sense.”
