Nets shocked by ‘terrible’ subway shooting

A gun attack has terrified New York – so far 16 people have been injured. At the time, the Brooklyn Nets were training just half a mile from the scene of the tragedy. The NBA team is in shock – but the play-in game for the playoffs later in the day will probably take place.
At least 16 people have been injured in a gun attack at a subway station in New York. Ten of the injured were hit by bullets, said the police, who are still looking for the perpetrator. The shooting took place on 36th Street, about half a mile from the Brooklyn Nets training center. The NBA team was deeply moved by the news of the attack on Tuesday morning local time. Superstar Kevin Durant and his teammates were shocked by the “devastating” news.
“It’s awful,” Durant said after practice ahead of tonight’s playoff play-in game against the Cleveland Cavaliers. “I don’t know the details. When you hear the sirens outside the training ground and see so much excitement outside, you hope and pray for the best for everyone involved.”
Durant explained that he first learned about the incident through text messages from team members, but no one initially realized how dire the situation was for them. “They sent us a message saying maybe there was some traffic, but I didn’t know why,” Durant said. “And then you look at your phone and you see the messages. I hate violence, I hate senseless violence. Hopefully we can figure out the details and get everyone safe and give everyone the help they need, but it’s a difficult one at the moment Situation.”
The sounds of helicopters circling nearby and the sirens of police and ambulance vehicles could be heard throughout the Nets’ training facility. Coach Steve Nash said he only learned of the tragedy once training began. “It’s obviously a very tragic morning,” Nash said. “We are devastated for the neighborhood and for those directly involved. I don’t know many details […] but we’re just all concerned for everyone involved. And at the same time we’re trying to prepare and focus on our task.” Point guard Goran Dragic said he would now think twice about taking the subway again.
The Nets prepared as if the play-in game would take place in Brooklyn as scheduled; the league continues to monitor the situation.
