  • Belinda Bencic (WTA 13) survives the 1st round at the US Open. The Swiss wins against Kamilla Rachimowa (WTA 72) in two sets 6: 2, 6: 4.
  • In the second set, Bencic not only fights against the Russian, but probably also against nausea.
  • In round 2 another feasible task awaits.

After the early out last time in Cincinnati, Belinda Bencic didn’t make another slip at the US Open. The Swiss put her stamp on the first round game against Kamilla Rakhimova from the start. It was only after 36 minutes of play that her Russian opponent brought her serve through for the first time. Immediately afterwards, Bencic secured the passage after defending against 3 break chances with 6:2.

Malaise in Bencic

Rachimowa, who gradually shed her initial nervousness, also sniffed at a break at the beginning of the second round. But she couldn’t expect any presents from Bencic on her 22nd birthday. The 26-year-old killed the opportunity and then put the turbo on. She secured 5 games in a row to 5:1.

With the clear lead behind her, the 2019 US Open semi-finalist lost her step again. She seemed to be struggling with a health problem, touched her stomach several times and had to let Rachimova come back to 4:5. The first duel between the two players ended after 1:41 hours with the second match ball.

More unknowns in round 2

In the second round, the only Swiss in the main draw will meet either the British qualifier Yuriko Lily Miyazaki (WTA 198) or the Russian Margarita Betowa (WTA 1022). Bencic has never played against either of them.
