24 survivors rescued after more than a week

A rescue team reached the people reported missing on Sunday on Mount Pic Macaya. They were flown by helicopter to the nearby community of Camp-Perrin for treatment. They were given food and hygiene kits. At first there were no further details.

The 7.2 magnitude quake occurred on August 14 in the southwest of the Caribbean state at a depth of around ten kilometers. At least 2207 people died, according to civil defense, a good 12,000 were injured and more than 300 were still missing. Around 130,000 houses were therefore damaged or destroyed. According to the UN Children’s Fund Unicef, 1.2 million people were affected by the tremor. Haiti, the poorest country in America, experiences severe natural disasters time and again. In 2010, more than 220,000 people died there after an earthquake.
