The Zurich FDP Council of States candidate Regine Sauter is not running in the second round of voting.
This was announced by the FDP Canton of Zurich.
Sauter took third place in the first round of voting on Sunday with 120,571 votes.
National Councilor Gregor Rutz (SVP) will now defend the middle-class Zurich seat in the Council of States in the second round of voting.
The FDP announced that the decision to withdraw Sauter came after detailed analysis and in-depth discussions with the civil parties and associations. The seat of the resigning Council of States member Ruedi Noser (FDP) could only be defended with the full support of all civil forces.
Sauter received fewer votes than SVP candidate Gregor Rutz in the first round of the Council of States elections on Sunday. In the run-up to the elections, the two candidates agreed on a list connection for the National Council elections as well as mutual support in the Council of States elections. The second round of the Zurich Council of States elections will take place on November 19th.
Retreats also in Aargau

After SP National Councilor Gabriela Suter, three other candidates for the Council of States in the canton of Aargau are foregoing the second round of voting. They stand united behind Marianne Binder-Keller (center).
There is no need for a right-wing conservative man for the second seat. With their withdrawal they want to prevent the election of SVP National Councilor Benjamin Giezendanner, who came second in the first round. Only the previous Council of States and FDP President Thierry Burkart managed to get elected straight away. The other candidates failed because of the absolute majority.
They wanted a Councilor of States, wrote National Councilors Irène Kälin (Greens) and Barbara Portmann (GLP) as well as Lilian Studer (EPP), who was not re-elected, in a joint communiqué. The center candidate Binder-Keller has the best chance of doing so in the second round of voting on November 19th.
